Milestones of the course of Biohellenika
from foundation until today
 
 
Biohellenika since its establishment has set as primary aims of function the providing of the best services to the family and the patients and the best environment for its employees. Today after 4 years of successful function, Biohellenika remains the first choice of parents for the collection and storage of their childrens’ stem cells.
 
Important dates in the course of Biohellenika:
 
7/3/2006: Establishment of Biohellenika SA of Northern Greece at Georgikis Scholis 65 Avenue, ZEDA building, in Thessaloniki, Greece.

28/8/2006: Establishment of Biohellenika Southern Greece and Islands

10/9/2006: The president of Biohellenika George Koliakos Associate Professor of Medicine is elected as member of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the International Society of Cellular Therapy (ISCT), the International Society of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine and the International Society for Stem Cells Research (ISSCR).

17/9/2006: Opening of  offices in the center of Thessaloniki.

28/9/2006: Certification of Biohellenika SA according to the international quality  standards, ISO 9001:2000  for the process, the quality control and the cryopreservation of autologous stem cells (hematopoietic autografts from the umbilical blood and mesenchymal autografts from the pulp of  deciduous teeth and third molars) by the international organization of Lloyds Register Quality Assurance. This certification today has expanded for the cryopreservation of mesenchymal stem cells from Wharton’s jelly and adipose tissue.

10/02/2007: The Institute of Biological Research and Biotechnology of the National   Research Foundation and Biohellenika were emerged in order to establish the Stem cells Bank of the National Research Foundation (TAK EIE).   In the line of this cooperation the National Research Foundation will take over the storage of the stem cells in case of Biohellenika bankrupts.  So it is the first and only stem cell bank until today that guarantees the 20 years storage.

06/11/2007: Cooperation with biggest maternity clinic in northern Greece, Genesis.

29/04/2007: Award from the MEDICAL SOCIETY of Athens to the scientific group of Biohellenika in the frame of the 33rd National Medical Conference for the scientific paper "Isolation and identification of a multipotent population of stem cells of the placenta blood”.  

24/04/2007: Award from the MEDICAL SOCIETY of Thessaloniki in the frame of the 22nd Northern Greece Conference for the paper presentation, titled “in vitro study of the transformation of primary mesenchymal cells of bone marrow into myocardial cells”.  Dr. Kouzi Koliakou, President of the Scientific Council of Biohellenika was participated in the awarded scientific group.  

18/1/2008: Certification o Biohellenika of Southern Greece according to the quality standard ISO 9001:2000 for the collection, transport and storage of autologous placenta stem cell population from the international organization Lloyds Register Quality Assurance.

08/02/2008: Biohellenika is the first company that has been accredited by the National Accreditation System with the 410 8/2/2008 accreditation certificate for the quality testing of the umbilical cord blood, that concerns the determination of the number of the nucleated cells and the viability of the hematopoietic stem cells and the microbiological testing for the detection of aerobe and anaerobe microorganisms and yeasts. Today the accreditation has expanded to the viruses testing by molecular methods (PCR).  

26/02/2008: Expansion of Biohellenika in Cyprus.

26/02/2008: Expansion of Biohellenika in Skopja.

27/02/2008: Opening of offices for parent services in  Patras.

28/02/2008: Biohellenika announces an insurance program for the children that covers all the duration of the private contract agreement,  in case of malignant disease and use the stem cells in Greece or abroad.

29/2/2008: In the frame of the 15th National Conference of Transplantation that took place in Thessaloniki on December 2007 the scientific group of Biohellenika was honored with the distinction of the conference for a new method of stem cells collection from the placenta that is performed in Biohellenika’s labs and that can provide the child with up to double amount of stem cells.

28/5/2008: The scientific group of Biohellenika SA presented a new pioneering service of mesenchymal stem cells storage from dental pulp of deciduous teeth and third molars and the foundation of the affiliated company named Dentolife.  This service was presented at the 38th National Dental conference on 23-25 of May 2008 in Patras.  

9/6/2008: Accreditation of the Stem Cells bank of the National Research Foundation, according to the international quality standards ISO 9001:2000 for the process, the quality control and the cryopreservation of placenta autologous stem cell population by  the international organization, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance.

19/8/2008: Foundation of the Molecular Analysis Laboratory for virus molecular testing of stem cells and the detection of genetic diseases.  In this laboratory the stem cells are examined for viruses detection,   by the PCR method, that provides safer and direct results, in comparison with conventional methods, without the need to repeat the tests to the  mother six months after giving birth.

16/07/2008: New service for the collection of stem cells from adipose tissue either for medical of aesthetic uses.

1/10/2008: Expansion of medical laboratories of Biohellenika Northern Greece to hi-tech facilities in more 2000 square meters. Biohellenika possess one of the largest laboratory facilities in Europe.

17/12/2008: The laboratories of Biohellenika SA function according to GMP standards, that have been certified with "Qualification of the clean rooms" according to standards of BSR Ingenieur - Buro, ISO 14644-5 and are especially designed for therapeutic applications of stem cells.

16/2/2009: Biohellenika performed in Thessaloniki the first therapeutic application of stem cells derived from adipose tissue in a diabetic patient who was suffered from diabetic ulcer of the leg.  

9/6/2009: Expansion of Biohellenika in Serbia

15/10/2009: Expansion of Biohellenika in Romania

28/7/2009: The first autologous transplantation of the umbilical cord blood stem cells that had been stored in Biohellenika, to a child that was suffered from cerebral palsy.  The administration took place at the Hematology University Clinic of Duke University and Biohellenika passed with success the first international test of thawing and safe administration of the sample.

8/10/2009: Biohellenika in collaboration with the Pneumonology clinic of Alexandroupolis University Hospital performed the worlds first administration of stem cells derived from the adipose tissue of the patient, directly to his lungs. The patient was suffered from autoimmune  type of  lung fibrosis.

23/10/2009: The Stem Cell Bank of the National Research Foundation was accredited by a certificate No 618 2/10/2009 by the National Accreditation System for the quality tests of the umbilical cord blood that concerns the determination of the number of nucleated cells and the viability of the hematopoietic stem cells, and the microbiological testing for the detection of aerobe or anaerobe microbes or yeasts.

31/12/2009: The first license of stem cells laboratory in Greece is administered to the laboratories of TAK EIE, a join venture of National Research Foundation and Biohellenika.

26/1/2010: The second autologous transplantation of umbilical cord blood stem cells that had been cryopreserved in Biohellenika’s labs in a child with cerebral palsy. The stem cells were administered to the child in the Hematology Clinic at Duke University.  This is the second successful test of stem cells administration for Biohellenika in an international level.

20/6/2010: Biohellenika announces the method of cryopreservation of mesenchymal stem cells from the total length of the umbilical cord after isolation and not segments. By this method all mesenchymal stem cells of the umbilical cord are stored and therefore no cellular proliferation will be needed in the future, that has an extra cost for the family and effect in  the quality of the cells.

21-22-23/9/2010: The laboratories of Biohellenika will be inspected by a committee of the American Association of Blood Banks for international accreditation.
 
Today Biohellenika has about 80 employees.
90% of them have a higher education, 85% of them have a master degree and 15% of them have a doctorate degree.
Biohellenika was founded and is directed by academic medical doctors that are responsible for the laboratories and the therapeutic administrations.
Biohellenika has a Department of Research and Development that has provided the market with six services: The service of storage of stem cells from the placenta blood, the placenta, the mesenchymal cells from the tissue of the umbilical cord, stem cells from deciduous  teeth, stem cells from adipose tissue and a fully equipped laboratory for molecular testing, infertility  tests, thrombophilia and searching of inherited diseases.  All laboratories are accredited by national organizations for the tests they perform.
Biohellenika has its own technology, has published 5 scientific papers in international journals of the field, three times has been awarded in medical conferences for the papers that were presented and has taken part in over 25 conferences
Biohellenika cooperates with the National Research Foundation, Aristotle University, University of Ioannina, and the Biomedical Institute of the Academy of Athens. Two research programs have been already approved by the General Secretary of Research and Technology for stem cells application on heart failure and osteoarthritis.
Biohellenika thanks the thousands of parents that trusted the most valuable material of their children at birth and assures that with the same enthusiasm and love will continue to support them in every phase of their life more or less comfortable.
